The Wild Crunchbase Trick To Find LPs
You probably thought that Crunchbase was really useful for startups, but not that useful for investment firms who were seeking data on LPs. I always thought that family offices, investment banks and investment firms had to use software like Fundingstack (promo code: ZEP) or Pitchbook to find LPs. That was true until recently. You *can* use Crunchbase to source LPs, and it’s not that tough. We went over this in our webinar with about 20 investment firms last week, and you can watch the webinar here. (Don’t worry, it’s super-short, we don’t like webinars either). Here’s how to do it.
Click on FIND INVESTORS
Write a query for one type of investment. For example, my fund D.F.A. Capital mainly invests in salestech, martech and customer relationship management CRM, so I looked up CRM LPs that had yielded at least 2 exits
Make sure that the “Number of Investors” column is selected, and ignore any results where that column has no results
Everything in that column, added together is your prospective list of LPs. You will need to parse and export that entire list. This may take some manual work. The picture you see above is 337 investors that may have an interest in CRM.
The more niche the investment category is, the better the results will be.

This week, he has some really cool pieces, including a writeup on the new HumaneAI Pin, and his take on HumaneAI’s launch video. It’s a pretty interesting company, and the two execs that started it have quite a bit of history at Apple (22 and 8 years, respectively). He also includes a cool piece on how to respond to bad PR, which is something that I definitely do not see most start-up founders knowing, right out of the gate. Read it over, and subscribe!
See ya next week, and don’t hide the afikomen in anybody’s nighstand, it’s a bad idea! 😂

Adam
